The Change You’ve Been Waiting For

The other morning as I was bending over, doing my regular morning stretch, the rush of blood to my head affected me in a weird way. As my head laid on the mat, I began to stare at the entrance wall of our house. I couldn’t help but notice how different the wall looked upside down. For years, I’ve stared at that wall and have thought that my options were little when it came to decorating that part of the house. But suddenly, as I’m looking at this space from a different angle, upside down to be exact, I could finally see the possibilities that existed all along.

I figured I could totally use this lesson in my everyday life. You see, I’m completely happy with where my life is going. After all, it is a reflection of my choices and thoughts. But sometimes the pressure I put on myself to excel makes me see life as a bit of a challenge — and not in a good way. I’m on a constant go-go-go mode, leaving me feeling exhausted and completely rundown. So lately, I’ve been feeling like I need a change. Maybe a new work schedule? A sleep upgrade? A robot controlled by really smart mice that would do my work? Something.

But after my little upside down incident, I realized all I really needed was a new point of view.

When things aren’t feeling quite right, it’s easy to think that what is needed is a change: a move, a breakup, a career switch. But if not given the proper amount of thought, those shifts can simply act as an escape goat. You can run all you want, but the baggage you travel with will continue to hold you down until you let some of it go. In reality, a change in how you look at that not-so-great situation can be all you need to create the miracle you’ve been yearning for.

I’ve decided to not look at life as something I need to conquer, but rather as something I need to live. In other words, I surrender. Today, I feel a sense of relief and calmness. And you know what the best part is? I didn’t have to turn my life upside down to experience the change.
